The Ehrenfeld district is becoming steadily more popular: at the end of 2000, the neighborhood‘s population was still just under 97,400. By December 2019, it had risen to almost 110,000. Thanks to the gastronomy, club scene and numerous cultural offerings, demand for living space in Ehrenfeld is high. However, the more space is used for housing, the less space is available to the public. To preserve the diversity that makes the neighborhood so popular, the remaining space must be used profitably.
In the course of our research, we noticed single-story houses with flat roofs among the predominantly multi-story buildings. These are shown in the accompanying photos.

The black dots show where they are located in Ehrenfeld. Buildings with multiple stories provide more floor space because it is increased in the vertical direction. Consequently, low buildings take up more space in proportion. This gave rise to the idea of using these roofs as public space. On them, for example, a garden could be created, a sports field or even an outdoor cinema.
